Finding God in the Journey of Dancing: A Poetic Experience
In a fast-moving world, many of us feel disconnected from our inner selves, from love, and even from God. We search for meaning, but often words fail to express the depth of our emotions or the longing in our souls. For me, dance became a language beyond words, a pathway to the divine.
Dance as Embodied Poetry
At its heart, dance is a form of embodied poetry. Each movement is a verse, each phrase a stanza, weaving a narrative that transcends language and speaks directly to the soul. In performing ancient stories through Kathak, I felt as if I was truly living in those times. As if God was there beside me, smiling back, blessing me, and making me more alive than ever.
Every performance became an act of devotion. Each god and goddess carried their own energy, transferring through music, lyrics, and expression, guiding me toward oneness with God. I became centered, blissful, and radiant; carried to a heavenly place where rhythm itself was prayer.
Our Bodies as a Vessel
Dance taught me that our bodies are more than physical forms; they are vessels of spirit. They can be instruments of prayer, tools of reflection, and pathways to deeper knowledge of God. Movement becomes a way of expressing the unexpressable; of turning silent devotion into visible art.
A Language Beyond Words
Dance is a language that bridges cultural and emotional divides. Through gestures, expressions, and rhythm, it speaks what words cannot. Each performance carries unique perspectives, portraying different emotions with precision and power. I found that dance was not only an art form but also a divine language that inspired me to write poetry to capture its beauty.
Dance as a Spiritual Journey
Kathak in particular holds deep spiritual meaning, often centered on Hindu gods and goddesses:
- Lord Krishna and Radha – Symbolizing divine love, Krishna’s playful interactions with Radha and the Gopis mirror the soul’s relationship with the ultimate reality, Brahman.
- Lord Shiva as Nataraja – The cosmic dancer, destroyer, and transformer, embodying both creation and destruction.
- Devi, the Divine Mother – A reminder of strength, nurturing, and protection.
- Ganesh Vandana – The prayer that begins every performance, invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and bless the journey.
Through these sacred dances, I experienced profound spiritual transformation. Each step, gesture, and story brought me closer to the divine, allowing me to feel God’s presence within and around me. It deepened my faith, teaching me that God’s wisdom and history live on through us — guiding, strengthening, and transforming.
My Book: Rise Above, Find the Sunshine: God, Life, Love: Poetry
In my new book, Rise Above, Find the Sunshine: God, Life, Love: Poetry, I share expressions that emphasize God’s existence within us, surrounding us, and guiding us toward transformation. These poems reflect how God helps us rise, love more deeply, witness miracles, and believe in possibilities. They invite readers to notice God’s presence and embrace faith as a source of strength and change.
The book traces a pilgrimage through three interconnected components — faith, hope, and trust — offering wisdom on life’s eternal nature and encouraging us to view life from multiple perspectives. I write about love as the binding force of our existence: to never give up on it, to honor its sweetness, and to recognize that even when love seems to fail, true love never fails us.
Lessons from Kathak and Pilgrimage
I find it especially meaningful to reflect on my pilgrimage through Kathak, where we journeyed into the Vedic times and the epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. In dance, each posture, gesture, and expression taught lessons of mythology, symbol, and spirit. Kathak evolved across eras — from temple storytelling to Mughal refinement to modern-day schools — with gharanas like Jaipur, Banaras, and Lucknow each offering unique emphases, from intricate footwork to graceful movements to soulful expression.
This journey reminded me that the emotions we express — love, joy, playfulness, anger, longing — are mirrors of life itself. Dance became a way to surf through life’s waves with strength and inner power, ultimately teaching surrender through steadiness and calm. Most of all, I learned that love is strength, sacrifice, and synchronicity — two souls moving in rhythm together.
A Pilgrimage Through Words and Movement
My final pilgrimage into writing poetry has been about celebrating the beauty of God, the power within us, and the love that nurtures our souls. Writing has taught me discipline, abundance, and the importance of living from the heart. My poems reflect a desire to inspire others, to bring hope, joy, and light into the lives of readers, and to remind us all that life itself is poetry.
Turning Dance into Poetry
This sacred journey naturally flowed into my writing. Dance inspired me to translate movement into verse — capturing divine stories, gestures, and emotions in poetic words. What began on stage became lines of poetry, and what lived in rhythm became eternal on the page.
That creative pilgrimage blossomed into Rise Above, Find the Sunshine: God, Life, Love: Poetry — a collection of poems that celebrates dance, divinity, and the human journey.
